After the cards are shuffled and the dealer has dealt everyone two cards, betting begins. The player to the left of the button has the privilege (or obligation, depending on the rules of the particular poker variant being played) of making the first bet. Each player then must either call that bet by putting into the pot at least as many chips as the player to his or her left did, or raise that bet.
